Answer:

Foeticide is the killing of a foetus at any time before its birth. After a baby is born, he will technically be called an infant so its death till 1 year will be called infanticide.

Can we see this in the present society?

Of course! We do. Depending on what type of society, the cause can be different.

As such, aborting a foetus is legal till 20 weeks of pregnancy but with a valid reason like congenital defects of the foetus or threat to the mother (under law by MTP Act). But apart from that, people do practise criminal abortions, i.e. without a valid cause or beyond 20 weeks.

In most societies, foeticide can be seen due to unwanted pregnancies as in case of unmarried women or widows. But more than that, it is the female gender. People practise female foeticide even today, irrespective of their position in the society or education that they have.

As per the Indian Census 2011 report, the sex ratio of India (females per 1000 males) is as follows:

Average India sex ratio – 933

Rural sex ratio – 946

Urban sex ratio – 900

State with highest female sex ratio – Kerala – 1058

State with lowest female sex ratio – Haryana – 861

In the past 10 years, the numbers are only getting worse. This shows that despite authorities cracking down on illegal abortion clinics, people are getting better at finding ways to abort their girl child.
