Folding and Fold Mountains

Explanation:

  • Folding:-
  1. Folding are the result of compressional forces.Compressional forces refer to the force acting on a strata in the opposite direction.
  2. When the compressional forces applied slowly under high pressure, the rock bed generates wavy undulations. Folds conists of anticline and syncline.
  3. The folds generated due to folding vary greatly in size i.e from few centimetres to kilometres.
  • Fold mountains:-
  1. Fold mountains are the result of folding.
  2. Fold mountains are created when two tectonic plates move towards each other due  to compressional forces.
  3. They are generally formed at convergent plate boundaries or continent continent collision zones.Example- The Himalayas in India,The Cape Fold Mountains of South Africa.
