Folk culture is usually related to the distant past of a society. The culture of a society in its early or primitive stage can be denoted as folk culture of that particular society. Societal institutions, faith, art, behavior, fable, music, dance etc. practised by a society in its distant past are within the scope of folk culture.

Assam has very rich cultural heritage. If we need to cite two folk culture of Assam, then Bihu will definitely come first. In Bihu we can find traditional dance form, music, catchy lyrics and faiths of Assamese people of olden era. Another example of folk culture of Assam is various Ballads (known as Malita) being performed or found in various parts. Monikonwar, Phulkonwar, Janagabhoru, Pagala-pagali, Moniram Dewan etc. are examples of such Malita

In other words the language, customs and traditions, dresses, music, traditional music instruments, dance, etc. of a particular region is called folk culture. Some examples off folk culture in Assam are mekhela chador and bihu dance.
