Follicles are tiny sacs of fluid that exist on the external layer of the ovaries which contain immature eggs (oocytes). At the right time, the follicle grows to the right size then it fractures and releases a matured egg that is ready to be fertilized. There is a popular misinterpretation that each follicle releases multiple eggs and the number of eggs in a follicle is only one.

Several follicles will start to develop with every cycle but, in general, only one of them will release an oocyte. The ones that do not release an egg break down. This process is called atresia and it could take place during any step of the follicle’s development.
