Explanation:

FORCE is a PUSH, or a PULL.

Examples of PULL:

1)A central mass applies a PULL on surrounding masses. We label this pull “GRAVITY” [out of sheer respect to Isaac Newton]. Each mass that experiences a PULL by another mass, also applies an EQUAL AMOUNT of PULL on the central mass. The PULL is opposite in direction of the other pull. Example: the Earth PULLS the Moon with a FORCE F and the Moon PULLS the Earth with a force F but in the opposite direction.

2)Two OPPOSITE charges apply a PULL on each other, quite analogous to #1. We call this PULL “The Coulomb Force of Attraction” [out of sheer respect to Coulomb].

3)Think of WHY we call these systems PULLEYS! Find the PULL in each segment. [Diagram courtesy of Wikipedia.]

4)A child PULLS a sled along the snow via a rope.

5)An office clerk PULLS a rubber band.

.6)Suspenders PULL a man’s pants UP.

7). A horse PULLS a cart. Oxen PULL a plow.

Examples of PUSH:

Two LIKE-charges apply a PUSH on each other. The PUSH by each is EQUAL and OPPOSITE to that of the other. We sometimes call this PUSH “electric repulsion” or its longer label “Coulomb’s Electric Repulsive FORCE”.

Whenever there is a “kick” or an impelling action, there is a PUSH: a hockey stick “pushes” a hockey puck; a foot “pushes” a football; a tennis racket “pushes” the tennis ball; etc.

To jump up, humans PUSH on the floor. Basketball players PUSH, both to jump and to impel the BB.

Cross-country skiers PUSH on the snowy ground with their ski-poles.

Whenever something bounces off a surface, there is a PUSH that’s causing it.

A disabled car on the highway may be PUSHED to the side by a group of friends, or may be PULLED by a tow-truck.

The BUOYANT FORCE is a PUSH UPWARDS.
