What is Force?
Force can be defined as a push or a pull that changes or tends to change the state of rest or uniform motion of an object or changes the direction or shape of an object. It causes objects to accelerate or add to their overall pressure. In simple terms, it is a push or a pull on an object that takes place when two objects interact. It is the basic cause of motion from rest.
Unit of Measurement
It is measured in ‘Newton’ (N). Newton measures the force needed to move, accelerate or speed up objects. The basic formula for it is, F = m.a, where, ‘m’ stands for the mass in kilograms and ‘a’ stands for acceleration in m/sec2. It may also be measured in Pounds.
Vector vs Scalar
There are two types of quantities :
Scalar: Quantities that are fully described by a magnitude (or numerical value) alone. Basically which does not require any physical representation or is not dependent on the direction is a scalar.
Vector: Quantities that are fully described by both a magnitude and a direction.
Force is a Vector Quantity
To define the force acting upon an object completely it not only requires the magnitude but also information regarding the direction of the force. Thus, 10 Newton is not a full description of the force acting upon an object. In contrast, 10 Newton, downward is a complete description of the force acting upon an object; both the magnitude (10 Newton) and the direction (downward) are given.
A force is a vector that has a direction so to represent a force in a diagram it is common to use an arrow. Such diagrams are called vector diagrams and are used throughout the study of physics. These diagrams are also used to draw the free body diagram of any physical system.
The size of the arrow implies the magnitude of the force and the direction of the arrow reveals the direction that the force is acting.
