the letter written to an organisation or to a official person is called the formal letter. eg:- letter to editor, application in school etc.

Formal letter is a type of letter which is generally used for formal purposes and is written to any organisation such as seeking leave (leave letter) , job appointment letter , letter to the editor of a newspaper are all examples of formal letter . Informal letters are generally used by the people to address their friends , relatives etc..
