if a dead insect get caught in hot mud , for example ,it will not decompose quickly, and the mud will eventually harden and retain the impression of the body parts of the insect. All such preserved traces of living organisms are called fossil. the age of fossil is determined by seeing the layer of soil how layer under the insect or animal is barried or by seeing the rate of carbon molecule in the dead animals body.
