Fossils:

  • Fossils are the impression or trace of plants or animals that belong to ancient age.
  • Fossils are the preserved remains of the organisms lived a million years ago. After the death of the living organisms, the soft tissues are decomposed. The remaining hard parts are buried by sediments.
  • The sediment that surrounds the skeleton becomes thick and turns to stone. When the skeleton dissolves in groundwater it turns to fossil. Evolution is the inheritable change of biological population.

Fossil help in tracing evolution:

  • They give clues that the present-day organisms are originated from the ancestors through the process of evolution. Because the characters inherited from the parents to the offspring remain the same.
  • Tracing evolution involves the identification of the relationships between different types of organisms with their ancestors.
