The first clear expression of nationalism came from the French Revolution. Revolutionaries introduced various measures and practices to create a sense of collective identity like notion of “la partie” (the fatherland) and “le citoyen”(the citizen), the tricolour, discouraging regional dialects etc.As the revolution spread to other european cities the students and the middle class were influenced by these ideas and started Jacobin clubs, preparing for the arrival of French Armies. Napoleon implemented the Civil Code of 1804 which did away with all privileges based on birth, introduced a centralised administrative system. The people eventually turned hostile as the disadvantages of higher taxes, lack of poltical rights and forced conscription to French Army couldn't be overcome by increased efficiency
