Friction is a force between two surfaces that are sliding, or trying to slide, across each other. For example, when you try to push a book along the floor, friction makes this difficult. Friction always works in the direction opposite to the direction in which the object is moving, or trying to move.

➞What is friction?

A force which acts at the surfaces of contact, when one body moves upon another body is called force of friction.

➞What are the types of friction?

There are three types of friction:

✦Static Friction:

The frictional force that comes into play when one body tends to move over the surface of another, but the actual motion has not started yet is called static friction.

✦Rolling Friction:

The frictional force that comes into play when one body is actually rolling over the surface of another body is called rolling friction.

✦Sliding Friction:

The frictional force that comes into play when one body is actually Sliding over the surface of another body is called sliding friction.

➞ Explain Friction as a boon and friction as a curse.

Force of friction brings about wear and tear in moving bodies. It produces heat and slows down a moving body. A lot of energy is wasted in overcoming friction.

However, if there were no friction, the bodies will either slip or not move. Furthermore, the bodies will not stop. Even walking on the surface of the Earth would have been impossible. Thus, we can say that friction is a necessary evil.
