Friction is a force that holds back the movement of a sliding object. That's it. Friction is just that simple. You will find friction everywhere that objects come into contact with each other. The force acts in the opposite direction to the way an object wants to slide.

A force that resists the relative motion or tendency to such motion of two bodies or substances in contact.

In simple words "The force that opposes the motion of moving body is know as friction"

Friction is the force acting along the two surfaces in contact which opposes the motion of one body over the another.

Friction is the force that slows down things down or keeps them from moving.

Friction is always in the direction opposite to the direction of motion.

The main cause of friction is the presence of irregularities ( unevenness ) on the two surfaces in contact.

smoothness of the surfaces is the main factors on which the friction depends.

There are three types of frictions :-

★ static friction :- The force of friction in static ( stationary ) situation is called static friction.

★ sliding friction ;- The force of friction acting between the two surfaces when one of them just slides over the another with uniform speed.

★ Rolling friction :- The friction experienced by a body when it is made to move over other bodies like roller or wheel is called rolling friction.
