Friction is a contact force which opposes relative motion between two surfaces in contact. Smooth surfaces or slightly wet surfaces have very little resistance when rubbed on.  Rough surfaces resist movement on their surfaces.  That is friction.

Friction depends on the type of the surfaces in contact with each other. It depends on the normal force (something like the weight) that one surface exerts on the other.

Friction causes losses of energy, corrodes materials and decreases their lifetimes.

Friction also helps us to walk or hold objects. If there is no friction, we cannot push the ground backwards with our feet. So we cannot progress forwards.
