friction is a force that acts between 2 bodies which are in contact. Frictional force are of two types static fric and kinetic fric.
Frictional force will act opposite to the direction of relative motion .
for better understanding
consider the wheel of a cycle . imagine the bottommost point of the wheel when the tyre rotates where will the point move forward or backward ? it will move backward ( you can actually try it if you have a bicycle ) now since frictional force tends to oppose motion it will act in forward direction because the wheel moves backward . Frictional force is the force that makes your car move forward on road . the engine just rotates the wheel . without frictional force your car would remain stationary . plus you wouldn't be able to walk without frictional force .
