the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another is known as friction .
Causes of Friction. Friction is a forcethat resists the relative motion between two objects or materials. Thecauses of this resistive force are molecular adhesion, surface roughness, and deformations. ... But surface roughness is a factor when the materials are rough enough to causeserious abrasion.

Frictional force is the force that opposes the motion of one body over the other and works in the opposite direction of force. It is a self-adjusting force. It is a contact force.
The main cause of friction is the interlocking of the irreglarities of the surface of the two bodies in contact because no body has absoulutely no irreglarities .
