Recall that the definition of mechanical force is F= m × a (force equals mass multiplied by the acceleration given to such a given mass). In a brake, because the friction is diminishing the velocity of the vehicle, i.e. de-accelerating it, the expression will be F= m × (-a) or -F = m × a.
