A force acting between two objects or a object to make it slow or to completely stop it ,is known as friction. For example , when a batsman hit a ball, the ball rolls and stops .

A force opposing relative motion between 2 surfaces.
Eg: friction helps us to walk by opposing relative motion of leg wrt ground
