It is the force which arises when two rough surfaces in contact tend to be in relative motion.
It can be realized as shown in above figure. It is due to interlocking of crest and troughs of rough surfaces. To be more precise it is electromagnetic force.
Typical example of friction is when you rub your hands against each other you feel they feel warm. It is due to friction only!
