The force acting along the two surfaces in contact when opposes the motion of one body over the other is called the force of friction or friction.

Friction is that property that opposes the motion of an object over another.

For example :

When a block is pulled by force F towards the right the force of friction acts towards the left and when the block is pulled by force F towards left the force of friction acts towards the right.
