To separate a mixture of two or more miscible liquids for which the difference in boiling point is less than 25K , fractional distillation process is used.
Air is a homogeneous mixture and can be separated into its components by fractional distillation. The flow chart shows the steps of the process.
Air
⬇
compress and cool by increasing pressure and decreasing temperature
⬇
Liquid Air
allow to warm up slowly in fractional distillation column
⬇
gases separated at different heights
⬇
[Boiling point(°C)=-183oxygen , -186argon, -196nitrogen]
[% air by volume=20.9oxygen, 0.9 argon, 78.1 nitrogen]
