These cells are those which divide repeatedly and helps plants in many ways. Their purpose is to make newtissues, helps plant to repair tissueswhich are injured in any manner and so on.

¤ It consists of undifferentiated actively divinding cells.

¤ the term meristem was coined by k.Nageli ( 1858).

¤ the cells in a meristem divide actively and produce new cells thereby promoting the growth of plant body.

¤ Meristems are regions within a plant body that is involved in formation of new meristemetic tissue.

¤ Meristematic tissue is divided into 3 types

● Apical meristematic tissue

● Lateral meristematic tissue

● Intercalary meristematic tissue.
