Human FSH is a glycoprotein consisting of two different protein chains,

with a number of carbohydrate chains attached. FSH belongs to the

family of glycoproteins called heterodimers, whose molecular structure is

characterised by two linked protein chains, called the α and β chains. In the

case of FSH, these chains consist of 92 and 111 amino acids respectively.

The carbohydrate molecules are attached to the protein ‘backbone’ made

up of these two chains

The presence of these carbohydrates is important to the biological activity

of the FSH hormone, since it strongly affects the hormone’s in vivo halflife,

as well as the process of receptor binding and signal transduction (the

mechanism by which the hormone affects the target cell’s activity).
