g can be positive or negative depending on how you choose the frame of reference for that particular question.

For ex :

If a ball is falling from a height and you are taking the displacement in downward direction as positive then g will also be positive as it acts in same direction.

If displacement in upward direction is taken positive then g will be negative as it acts in opposite direction.
