distinguish galaxies from stars, you can use the spectrum. Roughly, stars have a black-body like spectrum with features depending on the absorption and emission on the line of sight and in the chromosphere of the star. Galaxies on the other hand of a spectrum that is the composite of tons of stars.

- And there are billions of galaxies in the universe.
Stars:
- A star is a luminous ball of gas, mostly hydrogen and helium, held together by its own gravity.
- Nuclear fusion reactions in its core support the star against gravity and produce photons and heat, as well as small amounts of heavier elements.
- The Sun is the closest star to Earth. The Sun belongs to a galaxy called the Milky Way.
- Astronomers estimate there are about 100 thousand million stars in the Milky Way alone. Outside that, there are millions upon millions of other galaxies also!
