When irom reacts with oxygen in the atmosphere, it forms a layer of iron-oxide, or rust. The rust develops on the surface, and then chips off. Therefore, it slowly eats up the iron surface.
There are many ways to prevent rusting - by painting, oiling, greasing, or mixing it with other substances that do not develop rust. Another way is Galvanisation.
In galvanisation, we apply a layer of zinc on the iron surface. It prevents it from rusting affectively.
