The coating of zinc over a material to prevent rusting is known as galvanization.
Even when the zinc coat is broken ie there are some cracks on the zinc layer it doesn't corrodes the article because it oxidized more quicker than article say for example iron and doesn't let's the iron to react with oxygen.
