Gametes are the haploid cells which have half the number of chromosome pairs as present in their parent cells.

For example, let's take into consideration the human gametes.

Each of the human gametes are haploid is nature as they have only 23 chromosomes.

The parent cells have 23 pairs of chromosomes i.e. 46 in all.

Such gametes are produced by meiosis and NOT by mitosis.

Gametes are haploid in order to get the normal chromosomes number in the cells formed after the male and female gametes fertilize.

If gametes were not haploid then after each fertilization a new species would be formed. (Sounds funny, isn't it?)
