Ganga Action Plan (GAP) was launched in 1985 to clean Ganga river. The main aim was to set up sewage treatment plants in at least 25 cities along the course of Ganga river. It was not successful and was declared closed on 31st March 2000. Later on the Ganga Action Plan Phase-II was merged with the National River Conservation Authority (NRCA). This joint group now covers about 157 towns and cities along 31 inter-state rivers. This group now looks after the pollution abatement work. The holy Ganga river is still highly polluted.
