techniques to alter the chemistry of genetic material , to introduce these into host organism and thus change the phenotype of the host organism is called genetic engineering

it is used for gene cloning

to produce geneticaly modified organism to  get desired product

Genetic engineering (GE), also called genetic modification, is a branch of applied biology. It is the changing of an organism's genome using biotechnology.

It is direct manipulation of DNA to alter an organism's characteristics (phenotype) in a particular way.

Importance of genetic engineering

1. Disease- and drought-resistant plants that require fewer environmental resources (such as water and fertilizer).

2. Medicinal foods that could be used as vaccines or other medicines.

3. Increased supply of food with reduced cost and longer shelf life.
