Geographic Isolation in Evolution

It is the separation of members of a population by a physical/geographical barrier like distance, a mountain, water body and canyon.

This isolation disrupts the gene flow between the separated populations and results in the evolution of a distinct species (speciation). This happens as the isolated population has to survive in the new habitat which is different in terms of temperature, rainfall, food availability, competition, etc.

A typical example is the unique variety of plants and animals endemic to Madagascar island.
