Geometrical isomerism :-
Isomers which possess the same molecular and structural formula but differ in the arrangement of atoms or groups in space due to restricted rotation are known as geometrical isomers and the phenomenon is known as geometrical isomerism.
Cause of geometrical isomerism:-
- Geometrical isomerism is due to the restricted or hindered rotation around the carbon-carbon double bond.
- Due to the hindered rotation around carbon-carbon double bond, the relative positions of atoms or group attached to the doubly bonded carbon atoms get fixed.
- The geometrical isomerism exhibit both cis and trans isomerism.
