Geothermal energy is thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth. Thermal energy is the energy that determines the temperature of matter. The geothermal energy of the Earth's crust originates from the original formation of the planet and from radioactive decay of materials.

.........These underground reservoirs of steam and hot water can be tapped to generate electricity or to heat and cool buildings directly. Geothermal energy has been used for thousands of years in some countries for cooking and heating.

People can capture geothermal energy through:

Geothermal power plants, which use heat from deep inside the Earth to generate steam tomake electricity.

Geothermal heat pumps, which tap into heat close to the Earth's surface to heat water or provide heat for buildings.
