Geothermal energy is the heat from the earth. It's clean and sustainable. Resources of geothermal energy range from the shallow ground to hot water and hot rock found a few miles beneath the earth's surface, and down even deeper to the high temperatures of molten rock called magma.

Heat energy obtained from the Earth is called geothermal energy. For several years, geothermal energy has been used for cooking, heating and bathing (hot springs). It is a clean and eco-friendly source of energy. The USA has the world's largest geothermal power plants, followed by New Zealand, Iceland, Philippines and Central America. Other countries are Italy, Russia, Japan and Turkey which produce electricity from geothermal energy. In India, geothermal power comes from geothermal springs. The Himalayan region, the Godavari Valley, and the Son-Narmada-Tapi rift zones have geothermal springs. Geothermal plants are located in Manikaran in Himachal Pradesh and Puga Valley in Ladakh.
