Hydrogen and Oxygen (air under normal laboratory conditions) when mixed together form an explosive mixture (this is an intrinsic property of hydrogen). So, when a burning splinter is brought near the gas mixture - it explodes. Since the amount of gas is very small only a tiny pop sound is produced.

A glowing splint is held above a glass tube, in which oxygen gas is trapped. When the stopcock is opened, oxygen gas rushes out, and ignites the glowing splint. Testing for oxygen with a glowing splint.
