Glycosuria is caused by elevated blood glucose levels, most commonly due to untreated diabetes mellitus. Rarely, glycosuria is due to an intrinsic problem with glucose reabsorption within the kidneys (such as Fanconi syndrome), producing a condition termed renal glycosuria.

Polyuria is excessive or an abnormally large production or passage of urine (greater than 2.5 L or 3 L over 24 hours in adults). Frequent urination is usually an accompanying symptom.
