GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, the local clock time at Greenwich. From 1884 until 1972, GMT was the international standard of civil time. Greenwich Mean Time is also the name of the time zone used by some countries in Africa and Western Europe, including in Iceland all year round.

The Greenwich meridian time also known as gmt zero meridian is taken from a place called Greenwich situated below the location of England and it's time is 00:00

THE SIGNIFICANCE ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1.the GMT is the time can be measured by the help of "EARTH'S ZERO DEGREE" line of longitude or meridian

2.the line called Greenwich meridian runs from the north pole to the south pole and passes through the "old royal observatory "in Greenwich London

3. keep this line as the marker ,the terrestrial longitudes are marked and measured and the world's various time zones are calculated
