Go east movement' became popular in Vietnam in the first decade of the twentieth century. Many Vietnamese nationalists had close realtions with Japan and China. Japan at this time had modernised itself and its victory over Russia in 1907 proving its military capabilities. Thousands of the Vietnamese students visited Japan in order to receive modern education. The movement became popular because the aim of the Vietnamese students was not only to receive modern education but also to overthrow the French from their country and to re-establish Nguyen dynasty that was overthrown by the French.
