In computing, goal seeking is the ability to calculate backward to obtain an input that would result in a given output. This can also be called what-if analysis or back-solving. It can either be attempted through trial and improvement or more logical means.

Goal seeks in excel is also known as the what if analysis. Basically what it does is that it back calculates and provides data required by calculating from provided assumptions.

Like for example if it is required to find out revenue of an object and the formula for that is selling price multiplied by the number of units, Goal seek can calculate the number of units required to reach a certain fixed revenue.
