Goitre is also called enlarged thyroid . A goitre is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland , which is like butterfly - shaped organ located at the base of our neck.

The causes of goitre are :-

1.) IODINE DEFICIENCY :- The mineral iodine is needed for the production of thyroid hormones.

2.) GRAVE'S DISEASE :- in this type of condition , our immune system mistakenly attacks our thyroid gland , causing it to produce too too much of our hormones. This can case our thyroid gland to swell.

3.) THYROIDITS :- This condition can cause inflammation of the thyroid gland , which can causes it to enlarge.
