It is a nuclear theory of atom with is gold foil experiment . When he shot a beam of alpha particles at a sheet of gold foil, a few of the particles were deflected. He concluded that a tiny, dense nucleus was causing the deflection.

gold foiled experiment was done by Rutherford who was interested in knowing how the electrons are arranged within an atom. he designed an experiment in which fast moving alpha particle we're made to fall on a thin gold foil. he selected gold foil bez he wanted a thin layer which was about 1000 atoms thick.when Rutherford bombarded thin sheet of gold foil with alpha particle he found that :-
1)most of the alpha particle pass through the foil without any deflection. this shows that most of the space inside the atom is empty and hollow.
