Jute is a long, soft, shiny vegetable fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. It lies second to cotton in comparison to the amount of its production. It is composed mainly of cellulose and legnin. Its cultivation requires plain alluvial soil and standing water, basically it requires a monsoon type of climate. Bangladesh ranks the first in the concentation of jute whereas India ranks first in its production. In India it is found in the states of Assam, Bihar and West Bengal. India, China and Pakistan import higher qualities of jute fibre from Bangladesh for the production of jute material.
