Grafting is a method in which the cut portions of two different plants (one with root and other without root) are joined together in such a way that the two stems are joined and grow as a single plant.

  • The cut part having roots is called as stock
  • The cut stem of another plant is called as scion.

✦ For grafting, two plants are choosen which are used as scion and stock. The plant selected for scion is cut in a slanting way from the upper part.Similarly, for stock the other plant is cut in same slanting way leaving the lower part which is the stock.

✦ Then, Scion is placed over the stock and bounded tightly with a piece of cloth and covered with polythene sheet to prevent fungal infections and loss of water or sap.

⚠️ Grafting is not possible in mono cots, because there is no cambium activity.

The different types of grafting includes:

  • Simple splice graft - They are joined by cutting the slight surfaces of scion and stock and bound together.
  • Tongue graft - A extended cut from the scion is put into a cleft made in the same way in the stock. They are bounded tightly.
  • Whip graft - Both are cut in slanting way and bounded tightly.
  • Cleft graft - A deep cleft is made in the stock, then the scion is sharpened in the same way to fit into the stock. They are then bounded.
  • Side cleft graft - Here, a cleft is made on the lateral side of the stock and scion is put and bounded tightly.

⭒ It is combination of two different plant parts i.e stock and scion.

⭒ Stock is with well developed root system and scion is with well developed shoot system. Both are connected together in the region of cambium. Both plants are fused by polythene tape or polythene paper.

☢ Grafting is not possible in monocot and vegetables. Grafting takes place in spring season and closely related species.

  • Tongue grafting :- In this type tongue like cut is is made on stock and scion. eg - China rose.

  • Whip grafting :- it is also known as V shaped grafting in which stock is with hollow V shape and Scion is with solid V shape. eg - mango.

  • Crown grafting :- in this type diameter of stock is very large then scion so in a single stock more than two scions are inserted at the same time. eg - lemon.
