Grafting is the process of joining two plants together (an upper portion and a lower portion) to grow as one. The upper portion of the plant is known as the scion, which is attached to the lower portion known as the rootstock. This is most often done for fruit trees, and virtually all trees in orchards are grafted. Plant grafting is a technique in which tissue from one plant, the scion, is attached onto another, the rootstock. The rootstock produces new vascular tissue with which to feed the scion, and the graft heals.  Grafting is used to create stronger and more desirable plants. Common Types of Plant Grafts. Grafting is a form of plant propagation that consists of joining two separate plant parts together to create a new plant. The two parts to a graft include the scion, or the top branch, and the understock, also called the rootstock, which is the bottom portion with the roots.
