Suppose time travel were possible, and you travel into the past to a time when your mother’s father was just a boy. You meet him and kill him (perhaps accidentally). This prevents your grandfather from meeting your grandmother, prevents your mother from ever existing, and thereby prevents your own existence as well. This contradicts the fact that you exist in the first place. Hence, a paradox.
The term “grandfather paradox” is also used more generally to refer to any kind of inconsistency resulting from changing the past. It doesn’t have to involve your grandfather. For example, imagine you travel into the past and prevent your parents from falling in love and having children, thereby preventing yourself from ever existing. This almost happens in a scene from the film Back to the future.
