Explanation:

Before understanding this you must know about the meaning of Potential...

Potential is a characteristics of a location...We say at different location we may have same or different potential...

Suppose you lift a stone of mass 1 kg at certain height...You worked on it as you apply force and displaces it to that height...You loose your enegry and this energy gets stored on that stone at that particular height and Here we say it becomes a potential of a stone at that height...

If you keep incresing the height , you should apply more force to displace the same stone at different heights...Again you loose energy and this lose of energy become potential of the stone at different heights...

increasing heights of stone means increasing potential and vice versa..

the potential of stone is due to mass..As anytime we lift a mass...we work out against gravity , If we lift a mass to certain height , we work on it and loose our energy...This energy further stored in that mass and become potential of that location where we lift the stone....

The energy stored in stone or mass is called gravitional potential energy...

The measurement of gravitional potential energy = m × g × h

where

m = mass of any object

g = acceleration due to gravity

h = height
