the trapping of the sun's warmth in a planet's lower atmosphere,

Due to this , the radiation is trapped by the specific planet. This radiation is termed as Green House Effect.

The greenhouse effect happens when several gases in the Earth's atmosphere confront and get traps in infrared emission.  If a planet's environment comprises of the active gases such as greenhouse gasses then it will transmit heat in all directions. Several gases in the atmosphere block radiation from escaping.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases act similarly like the blanket which absorbs the IR radiation and block them to escape into outside space. The total effect is the continuous heating of the Earth's climate and surface, and this process is known as global warming.
