A large increase in crop production in developing countries achieved by the use of artificial fertilizers , pesticides and high yield crop varieties .

Merits :-

1) higher yield due to the use of HYV seeds .

2) higher yield enabled farmers to sell the surplus food in the market and earn more .

3) pesticides and insecticides are able to protect the crops from pests and insects .

4) a good irrigation system is able to enhance crop production .

Demerits :-

1) loss of soil fertility due to increased use of chemical fertilizers .

2) the chemical fertilizers , easily soluble in water , can dissolve in the groundwater and pollute it .

3) They can kill bacteria and other microorganism helpful for the soil .

4) excessive use of fertilizers can also make the soil alkaline and unfit for cultivation .
