The spread of green revolution technology enabled our economy to achieve self-sufficiency in food grains. Enormous increase in the production of food grains through the use of high yielding variety seeds for wheat and rice.

Green revolution refers to the introduction of High yielding variety (HYV) of seeds and increased use of fertilizer and irrigation methods. It took place during the 1960s especially 1965onwards. It was aimed at providing increase in production to make India self-sufficient in food grains.


Merits:

1. It allows agricultural operations on a large scale.

2. It has the potential to be able to grow any crop anywhere.

3. It eliminates the need to fallow lands.

Demerits:

1.It can cause pests and weeds to develop hazards.

2.It employs mono-culturing.
