the trapping of the sun's warmth in a planet's lower atmosphere, due to the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the planet's surface.

When the sun rays warms the earth some parts of the radiation that falls on the earth. A part of the reflected radiation is trapped by the atmosphere.

This trapping of radiations by the earth's atmosphere is called as green house affect.
