the trapping of the sun's warmth in a planet's lower atmosphere, due to the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the planet's surface.

The effect is the nature's heating system. without it, life on earth would not be possible;it would be too cold. Sunlight enters the earth's atmosphere, passing through the blanket of green house gases. In this the temperature increase is due to an increased use of fossil fuels. They act like the green house gases and trap heat inside the atmosphere of earth which results in the heating up of the earth's surface leads to global warming.
